Finding and Analyzing Current Threat Information - April 1, 2016 Meeting

Post date: Apr 5, 2016 1:06:06 AM

Determining current threats to the safety of our country and families has become a challenge. Mainstream media such at the major networks and traditional print media outlets are unreliable and biased at best and agenda driven propagandist at worst. The explosion of internet based “new media” has given us many sources for more current data but sifting through the sludge to get to the nuggets can be a daunting task. Here are some tips and sources that might help you find reliable reporting of information you can analyze to determine what our current threat level really is.

Let’s start with tips on how to organize and analyze the information you gather:

1. Decide where you can find the information that you need.

2. Gather the information from the sources that you identified.

3. Quickly skim and scan the information.

4. Determine accuracy, relevance and reliability of information.

5. Differentiate – is there anything unique about the information? Is this new information or simply a re-hashing of information you’ve already seen and analyzed?

6. Identify propaganda and bias.

7. Recognize omissions and faulty logic

8. Recognize interrelationships and themes.

9. Connect disparate pieces of information.

10. Pay attention to the source of the information

Good analysis starts with the fundamental question or questions you want to answer as you analyze the intelligence you gather. Here are mine:

What is the real threat level?

Is it a national, regional or local problem?

Who presents to most immediate danger?

What action do I need to take today, near term and long term?

These questions are the filters through which I process daily national security related data. Using relevant questions allow us to draw real time hypothesis and determine appropriate courses of action.

Finally, the most important steps are to start and end with prayer. I always try to start with "God, guide my thoughts and my search. Let me see through your eyes, hear through your ears, and understand with your purposes in mind." A good ending might be, " What part do I play in your plan, Lord? How would you have me use this information and with whom should I share it?"
