Welcome to NNHS Family Connection

To meet the essential needs of the Naperville North High School community families facing hardship by providing temporary means of support.

Our vision is that all of the Naperville North High School community families have their essential needs met.

With over 500 donor members, NNHS Family Connection is a collaborative group of NNHS families, staff, and community members dedicated to meeting the essential needs of the NNHS school community facing hardship. Its success depends upon the loyalty and generosity of its donors, coupled with the knowledge and compassion of the NNHS staff, who through their expertise, identify the needs of the families and chart the best course of action. As a team, we are committed to providing our families with vital community resources so they can reach a level of stability in their lives. It is this climate of partnership that continues to sustain NNHS Family Connection today.

Born out of a desire to assist struggling students and their families, NNHS Family Connection was the dream of parent volunteer, Loretta Berndt. Armed with a plan and a heart to serve, Loretta and a small, yet determined, group of parent volunteers met with high school staff to discuss the emerging needs of the NNHS families. The result was the formation of Family Connection in 2002. Loretta stood at the helm of the newly formed team of parent volunteers, whose goal was to meet the needs of the high school families experiencing difficult times. A budding donor database of fifty parent members was formed to fill the requests and a generous grant from the Exchange Club of Naperville was awarded to the grassroots organization in support of its services to the community.

A relocation prompted Loretta to leave Family Connection after four years, but nearly a decade later, the organization she founded has expanded to include over 750 members, earned national recognition, and now serves as a template for surrounding Naperville District 203 schools. It is because of this expansion that NNHS Family Connection now has the “NNHS” distinction in the organization’s name.

NNHS Family Connection was fortunate to have Lyndsey Kokoris as its passionate Parent Leader from 2008-2013; we are grateful for her endless enthusiasm and dedication to the program.

It is our privilege to serve together on the NNHS Family Connection team. Our empathy, sensitivity, and respect for those we serve, coupled with our shared beliefs, commitment to the mission and trust in each other are the values that make up our team.

Every dollar of your donation helps to meet the essential needs of the NNHS school community families facing hardship. When the needs of the families are identified by staff, a brief description of the need is sent out to the Family Connection donor database via e-mail (no names mentioned) as well as suggestions on how to assist. If you choose to respond to the request, great! If not, simply delete the e-mail. There is never any pressure to help—participation is optional. Families are generally given aid—usually in the form of gift cards--twice per year, excluding our annual Thanksgiving and Holiday programs.  As the economy has impacted more of our families, local resources such as Naperville CARES (www.napervillecares.org)  and Loaves & Fishes (www.loaves-fishes.org)  are now in place to assist with basic needs such as food, utilities, and shelter. Family Connection allows for temporary means of support, while families are being referred to other resources.  Members may also donate gently used coats/clothing  and provide meals for families in distress.  Detailed instructions are provided in the e-mails, and our recipients are very grateful for your assistance!

As a Family Connection donor member, you do not volunteer. The benefit of the program lies in the value of your gift—the knowledge that you bring hope and joy to the students and families you serve, as well as meaning to your own life. Please join us!

For those of you who wish to mail in a donation, every contribution—no matter how small—will help ensure that our students and families get the support they need. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
