Minutes of the April 1, 2013 meeting
Present: Ron Becker, Ben Beede, Tim Corlis, George Dawson, Raymond Frey, Bonita Craft Grant, Paul Israel, John Kuhl, Alan Lucibello, Gail Malmgreen, Marc Mappen, Laura M. Poll, Gary Saretzky, Adam Shery, Carla Zimmerman, Julia Telonidis.
In the absence of Maxine Lurie, Bonita convened the meeting in the Pane Room of the Alexander Library.
Minutes: The minutes of the December 4, 2012 meeting were approved.
Treasurer's Report: Bonita Grant stated that the account balance is 280.79, and cash on hand is $21.05. $400 has been sent to the U.S. Treasury for our 501©3 application. The report was approved.
Membership: Carla Zimmerman reported that the NJSAA has 68 members. She will do a mailing to attract new members and to ask current members to pay their dues.
Committee on author awards: The committee is seeking nominations. Ben Beede said that the fiction and poetry categories have been eliminated.
Committee on the Award for a Librarian: Ron Becker discussed the award; Carla asked him for information she could put on the NJSAA website.
Committee on Teaching Awards: Alan Lucibello will publicize the award at the April 12 New Jersey Council for History Education, which will be held at Seton Hall. He urged members to attend.
Stellhorn Award Committee: Richard Waldron sent by email. No nominations so far. A reminder will go out by the end of the month.
Graduate Student Papers Award: Paul Israel stated that a few nominations have been received; the committee expects to get more.
Alan Lucibello and Marc Mappen discussed the sad situation for teaching New Jersey History. There are no K-12 history/social studies curriculum standards. Instead instruction in history and social studies is subsumed under English Language Arts. Ron Becker observed that New Jersey History Day was one positive contribution to teaching.
Ron Becker discussed activities connected with the 350th Anniversary of New Jersey, including the compilation of a list of the 350 best books about the State.
Gary Saretzky discussed the annual Archives and History Day events in Monmouth County during October. Prohibition in New Jersey will be the theme.
Julia Telonidis informed the group that the papers of John Cunningham have been given to the Newark Public Library.

December 2, 2013. 3 pm business meeting; 4:15 Chad Leinaweaver will chair a panel of award-winning New Jersey authors.
Presentation on New Jersey’s Civil War photographers: After the formal meeting was adjourned, Gary Saretzky gave a presentation to the attendees.
