2017 February 28 meeting minutes

Treasurer's Report (Richard Waldron): Closing balance as of February 28 is $1,578.63. See report dated December 6, 2016 to February 28, 2017 for details. The financial situation has improved overall. Please see Karl to pay membership dues or to make a donation.

Membership Report (Karl Niederer): Karl reported 100 members on the active roster, with 93 members paid for the 2016-17 year. 7 individuals are unpaid for current dues year and they received reminders in Dec. 2016 and Feb. 2017. 7 new members joined this year (July 2016-present). Karl provided the chair with a list of all inactive members (dues unpaid prior to 2015-16) for review and a decision as to whether to remove them from roster. Membership brochure has been revised and reprinted to reflect the new spousal or family membership category, at a rate of $10 per year, and $30 for 3 years.

It was noted that donations can be directed to specific funds. In future membership letters Karl will stress donations as tax-deductible contributions to support the awards program.

Website/Facebook Page (Tara Maharjan): 153 Facebook likes. She will be creating automatic Facebook posts as reminders of awards nominations. Laura encouraged everyone to like/share Facebook posts to increase numbers and exposure.  Alert Tara to any website changes that need to be made. Karl will create a donation form for the website. Dick has been writing a history of NJSAA, which Maxine suggested posting to website when ready.

Committee on Author Awards (Deborah Mercer): 29 authors and 15 publishers have been contacted. 9 authors have committed to sending books. Deborah will be revising the committee's guidelines (the checklist for reviewers).

Roger McDonough Award Committee - for Librarian/Archivist) (Bob Vietrogoski): Bob requested that the award competition be announced at the fourth meeting of the year (April 4th this year). There are currently 1 or 2 nominations.

Committee on Teaching Awards (Raymond Frey): Ray is revising the award explanation to be more New Jersey-centric. He will circulate a draft.

Paul Stellhorn Award Committee - for undergraduate papers (Richard Waldron): Dick reports that publicity was done by Feb. 11. Notices went to H-NJ and PA, and NJ and out of state history departments, including community colleges.

Graduate Student Papers Award (Paul Israel): 1 submission to date. An announcement went to H-Net.

NJSAA Lecture Series & schedule of future events (Laura Poll): April 4: Andy Urban, Teaching Award winner and the Stellhorn Award winner will present. October: David Blake, TCNJ on his book Liking Ike; December: Author Award winners; February: Sandra Moss on her book Poliomyelitis: Newark 1916.

The group discussed pros and cons of co-sponsored lectures, then agreed to move forward with another co-sponsored lecture this year. Laura will report back on location and speaker. Give Laura names for future speakers with an academic bent.

Development Committee: essentially non-existent, no report. Maxine pointed out that the organization is ok for now but if there are many award winners, the treasury will be drained. Focus needs to be on donations and membership. Let Maxine know if you have ideas of new items to sell.

New Business and Member News:

·       MARAC will be in Newark at the Robert Treat Hotel, April 20-22.

·       Karl reported on the impending probable move of State Archives staff/functions to Ewing while the State House undergoes renovations. The move would cause a significant disruption for researchers, especially in light of the interconnectivity of the various cultural organizations on State Street. Advocates for New Jersey History are aware of the situation and will be getting involved.

·       Dr. Virginia A. Dilkes will give the 31st Annual Bishop Lecture, “Through the Eyes of a WWI Combat Engineer,” on March 9 at 6pm in Alexander Library at Rutgers.The lecture will be the opening reception of the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Spring 2017 exhibition “Heaven, Hell, or Hoboken!”: New Jersey in the Great War, located in the Special Collections & University Archives Gallery and in Gallery '50 in Alexander Library.

Following the business meeting, Frank J. Esposito and Donald Lokuta spoke about their book Victorian New Jersey – Photographs by Guillermo Thorn from the Kean University Collection.
