Club membership is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. We welcome Penn State students (undergraduate and graduate), as well as faculty, staff, and community members.
All you have to do to join is to show up for one of the club trainings and train. Just wear comfortable clothing. No gi (uniform) is required to start, but if you would like to purchase a gi you can do so through the club instructor. You will need a gi if you wish to test or participate in tournaments. You should also have an ISKF patch on your gi, which can be purchased through the club instructor.
No previous martial arts experience is required to train. If you have trained in other martial arts before, you would be expected to wear a white belt to begin, but students with prior experience often advance quickly within our rank system. If you have trained in Shotokan karate before, you can wear whatever belt you currently have, but it will not be formally recognized until you have tested with the club, unless you are already a member of the ISKF.
You will need to complete a registration form and waiver to begin training. There will be copies at training, or you can find these forms on our resources page and bring them with you to your first class.
We charge monthly dues to train with the club. Dues are collected to cover club expenses, which include rent, insurance, and club dues. Our instructors do not get paid to teach. View more information on the dues page.
You can learn more about our instructors and additional training information, as well as dojo etiquette and the dojo kun and niju kun. This will help you learn a little more about our philosophy and approach to karate training. Those of you wishing to advance in rank should look at the testing requirements for our club.
