Popplet (TM 5)

2. Popplet is a great, interesting, and interactive way to teach a lesson and incorporate videos or links without ads or distractions. I would use Popplet to make whole class mind maps for different subjects, as well as have my students use Popplet individually or in groups to make their own mind maps. I could use mind maps to display what my class already knows or thinks about a subject before we actually go into the lesson. I could also use Popplet at the beginning of the year to introduce myself, and have my class make “About Me” Popplets. There are an endless number of things to do with Popplet; you could make a Popplet for almost every objective in the ALCOS standards. For example, showing the different states of matter, giving a lesson on the founding fathers, showing addition facts, or brainstorming for a story.

3. I chose this tool based on the following criteria:

  • It is easy to understand and use for both the teacher and students.
  • It is free.
  • It is easily accessible from any device.

4. I mastered Popplet by actively creating my own Popplet, and also looking at a number of examples Popplets. When I created my own, I looked through every customization option and all of the tools to know everything there is to do with Popplet. I also watched a few short videos on people explaining how to use Popplet and different things you could use it for. I also looked at Popplet’s blog where they give different ideas and also at their twitter.

5. ISTE standard for teachers:

  • 2a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
  • I chose this standard because Popplet is a learning experience that can be designed by either the teacher or the student using the interactive tools it provides. Students can learn by the teacher creating a Popplet for different lessons, or create their own Popplet.

6. This sample is a Popplet I made on facts about the Moon. I would use this Popplet to show students all about the Moon, and would probably create a Popplet that includes all of the planets. This sample shows that I can successfully create a Popplet and incorporate all different features such as changing different colors, adding links, imbedding videos and images, and creating a jpeg of the mind map.
