For a number of years now I have enjoyed reading the bible in all its parts, using a variety of approaches and techniques in an attempt to get as full a grip as possible on a divine message I believe exists there above that of the human authors. I am constantly thrown back, however, on those pesky human authors. It's always been a matter of regret to me that God did not see fit to let me stay lazy by providing his My Complete Works on golden tablets direct from Paradise Publishers, in the first person singular. Seeing as he has chosen instead to make us work with a collection of human texts describing God in the third person, it seemed to me that I might as well knuckle under and get stuck in to the hard work of understanding what those humans had to say, in the way they said it, across the whole of the piece.
