Empire State Building
New York, NY
Shep took Nicole out to a delicious dinner at Wallse Restaurant. There were red rose petals and candles all around. The ambiance was amazing and Nicole had the most handsome date there. Shep picked the restaurant because of its reputation for romance. The food was Austrian and the menu was a 4-course Prix Fixe. We enjoyed the food with some red wine, and then both had a berry dessert. The waiter gave us some yummy chocolates to take home as a V-day treat. That wasn't the only thing Shep took away from the dinner table though - he also grabbed a napkin because he thought it might come in handy later on...
After dinner, Shep suggested we do something special for the occasion. Nicole naively agreed, assuming Shep would think something up on the spot since we didn't have any other plans made... at least none Nicole was aware of!
We hopped into a cab and Shep directed the driver to 33rd & 5th. "Where are we going?", Nicole asked him. He replied that it was a surprise. She obviously had no idea what was in store for her that evening! :)
We exited the cab and started walking down the street. Nicole was trying to guess where we were going, but simply couldn't figure it out. All of a sudden, Shep steered her into the Empire State Building!
We got on line, Shep pulled out express tickets (that's when Nicole realized this wasn't as spur-of-the-moment as it seemed), and straight to the 86th floor we went! The sky was so clear and the views were stunning! Here is a picture we took from the top.
We walked around on the terrace of the Observatory and looked at the views for a while, which were breathtaking. While Nicole was busy trying to identify the buildings 86 stories below, Shep was busy being nervous. He was worried that the freezing cold and windy air would chase Nicole inside before he could accomplish what he set out to do. Out of the blue, Shep announced that he had to "tie his shoe". That's when he got down on one knee and began to propose. Nicole was so surprised!!! Nicole knelt down beside Shep. It took her a few minutes to actually realize what was happening and Shep apparently had to ask Nicole to marry him 3 times before she could finally get the "YES!" out, but eventually Nicole pulled herself together and accepted Shep's incredible proposal! Nicole felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Shep felt relieved. :) Shep was also very prepared. Not only did the Wallse napkin he swiped come in handy to dry his new fiancee's happiness tears, but he also came prepared with a camera to document the night!
Shep flagged someone down to take our picture and told the woman we just got engaged. She congratulated us and told us she was hoping she would see a couple get engaged tonight; and we said we were glad to unknowingly grant her wish. She took our picture and asked to see the ring, so of course Nicole stuck her hand out proudly. "Hoooooly Shhhhhhh...(use your imagination)...!", she exclaimed. Yep, that's right! As she walked away, Nicole turned to Shep and (still in a half-dazed state) wondered aloud if they should invite the woman to the wedding.
Here are some pictures from the moments after the engagement... enjoy!
Shep announced to the bartender at the restaurant that we were freshly engaged, so he treated us to these petit fors!
We headed back to Hoboken and ended the night by taking pictures of the Empire State Building from the roof of The Sky Club before the lights went off for the night. The lights were pink for Valentine's Day... very romantic. Here's one of the less blurry shots we managed to get before the clock struck 12. :)
So there you have it! After 3 wonderful years of dating, we are engaged and are looking forward to creating many more happy memories together, and to becoming husband and wife!
