I am an Associate Professor of Finance at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University and a Research Member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI)I earned my PhD in Finance at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. I also hold an MBA and a Master of Science in Finance from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. Prior to joining SMU, I served on the faculty of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

My research is in empirical corporate finance, with a focus on corporate governance and shareholder monitoring. I study the role of institutional investors in improving firm governance and performance. My publications examine the incentives of large shareholders to become active monitors and the role of institutional trading in the emergence of hedge fund activism. My recent work investigates whether peer firms undertake real policy changes under the threat of activism and study specific mechanisms through which hedge funds influence M&A outcomes at targeted firms.
