SMILING HEARTS DONATES DEFIBRILLATOR TO DULUTH YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER ASSOCIATION
Smiling Hearts - The Nick Blakely Foundation donates its fourth AED to Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation.
Lawrenceville, GA - Smiling Hearts - The Nick Blakely Foundation (NBF) announces the gift of a new automated external defibrillator (AED) to Duluth Youth Football & Cheer Association (DYFCA). The DYFCA serves children of all ages and backgrounds, offering football and cheer activities.
More than 300 youth from Gwinnett County participate in DYFCA's programs yearly, along with their parents, and dozens of DYFCA's volunteers. Currently, DYFCA does not maintain a defibrillator and plans to place the AED at the football field at Shorty Howell Park where its programs are held.
"While we require physicals for children to participate in football and cheer, we are aware that these tend to be done at a high level and many conditions are not caught. It is our hope that no child is ever faced with an incident in which we are not prepared or able to help," explains Yvette Huertas, Treasurer of DYFCA.
Today, NBF announces our AED donation to DYFCA on what would have been Nick's 22nd birthday. This achievement marks NBF's fourth AED placement in Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation as part of its continued efforts to combat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
Commenting on the donation, Ryan Brown - Executive Director of NBF - "When we first began our work, we identified several parks in Gwinnett County without an AED. We are proud that we have been able to reduce that number and it is our mission to make sure all parks in the area have a defibrillator on site."
SCA continues to be the number on killer of youth in sports. Cardiac arrests can happen anywhere, at any time, and bystander intervention and treatment with an AED has been shown to increase the survival rate by three times.
