A growing junior table tennis programme, a top facility at Saxton Stadium and year-round competition has seen college and intermediate players from Nelson win seven titles at the recent South Island open championships.
Competitors from throughout the country came to compete in the tournament. At the senior level, the likes of Auckland and Waikato were strongly represented. At the age-grade level, Nelson mainly took on competitors from closer to home with Marlborough and Canterbury the main contenders.
Nelson's top junior player Henry Neas of Nelson College played like a champ and got the chocolates, taking out the D grade singles and doubles along with the under-15 singles titles. Henry combined with Nelson College's Oliver Bellamy to win the boys' under-18 doubles over Canterbury.
