INCOMING FRESHMEN ORIENTATION
The incoming freshmen orientation is THIS THURSDAY 04/28 from 5p - 7p at the Zoo Magnet Campus. Please join us as we discuss what to expect in the fall and introduce you to our teachers, parents, and students. Interested in joining a club, sport, or other organization at our school? Zoo magnet students representing a multitude of programs at the Zoo campus as well as NHHS will be on hand to answer your questions about how YOU can be involved in our school community.

With 25 dynamic speakers for Earth Day and 180 guests at Zoolapalooza, Earth Day was another great success. Most of our organizers were seniors. If you are interested in keeping this tradition alive and would like to help with next year’s events, see Carey Diaz, Joy Gursky, Ms. Hope or Ms. Benitez.
Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) river cleanups

Zoo Crew Elections Zoo Crew elections are right around the corner for 2016-2017 officers. As you may have noticed, campaigning has officially started. Elections will take place on Friday, April 29th in 2nd period during BIC and at the end of 6th period for students with 1st/2nd at NHHS. Your nominees are:
We will be holding campaign speeches and debates for each officer position during nutrition and lunch respectively on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week so you can get to know your candidates.
Gwen Goldman is running unopposed for Senior Historian and Ebony Francisco is running unopposed for Secretary. Senator and Representative applications rising 10th-12th graders will be available the first week of May.
Zoo Yearbook Sales Zoo Yearbooks will be on sale April 25th - 29th for $30. We will ONLY be selling that week and we will only order as many yearbooks as people buy. So, if you want a yearbook you must buy it that week - cash only please. We will preview some pages at the sales table if you want to check it out before buying.

Time to complete your Community Service Hours! Tree People, Heal the Bay, Best Friends Animal Society, Gibbon Conservation Center, church, schools, hospitals, and MEND Food Bank are just a few organizations students have volunteered their time. The deadline to submit hours is May 15!!
The Better Way!!! Scholarship is awarded to worthy graduating seniors who have financial need and plan to attend a two or four-year college or university. Preferred Criteria is that the students have a 3.0 or higher gpa, and are first generation college students or low income. Up to two $2,500 scholarships and five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded at Senior Awards Night. Last year all recipients of this scholarship were Zoo Magnet students!!! See Mrs. Fender for an application due by Friday, May 23rd.
Ruben Salazar Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to graduating college bound seniors who attend any LAUSD high school. It is given in honor of Ruben Salazar, an award-winning journalist who wrote extensively about the plight of Spanish speaking Americans in the United States. Download the application at www.utla.net/scholarships. Application and essay or poem must be received by April 15th. Come to the office for more information.
Christa McAuliffe Scholarship McAuliffe, along with six other crew members, was killed on Jan. 28, 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida. To commemorate her pioneering spirit, UTLA established the Christa McAuliffe Memorial Scholarship Fund to assist students in continuing their studies and expanding their abilities. Students may enter an original art project, drawing, or poem. Entries must be received by April 21. For more information, come to the office.
Volunteer at the Zoo this summer The LA Zoo has requested Zoo Magnet students to join this summer’s General Volunteer Program. Students 16 and older can apply. They have a special project for our students, so when you apply, make sure to include that you are a current Zoo Magnet student. For more information, visit the LA Zoo website. NOTE: The Zoo offers two volunteer programs: General Volunteers and Student Volunteers.
