Rationale for this Special Session:

With the development in optical manufacturing and signal processing, light field, which was first described in Arun Gershun's classic 1936 paper of the same name, draws increasing attention both from the industry and the academy. A variety of devices have been designed to de-correlate light rays coming from different directions on different wavelengths, within which compact architectures present high potentials in applications. However, based on the compact optical architecture, how to acquire a wide, high resolution light field with high fidelity is challenging to both optical design and the related processing techniques, like calibration, modeling and registration. Also, because of the variation in the distribution of the signal and the correlation among each dimension, how to efficiently compress and reconstruct the light field for a variety of applications is becoming a very important problem strongly affecting the applications of light field. Consequently, this special session focuses on the advanced devices, techniques and algorithms targeting light field acquisition and compression. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
