TOTAL ACCESS IN THE NEWS - from the Monroe Monitor - March 5, 2011
Like many disabled people, Joe lives on a tight budget, and
the free dinner offered Tuesday nights at Monroe Covenant Church helps him get
But the 106-year-old church isn't equipped with a ramp for
his electric wheelchair. So each week, he has waited while volunteers set up a
temporary ramp and helped him negotiate the stairs. Once he was there, he
couldn't use the bathroom; the restrooms were very small and required the use
of stairs to reach them.
Now, Joe and others in his predicament will be able to
access the entire building for Tuesday night dinners and other services offered
at the Sams St. church, thanks to an extensive remodel complete this month.

YARD SALE SUCCESS - HOMELESS TEENS RAISE $600!
Several of "our" homeless teens wanted to do a fundraiser to "give back" to the Next Step. Together with Janos Kendall, our Drop-In Center Director, they decided to put on a yard sale. They chose August 27th - the date of the Fair Days Parade on Main Street. Janos and her friends helped find donations of hot dogs, chips and sodas.
Four of the teens got their food handlers permits so they could barbecue hot dogs.
The "sale" was set up on the Next Step lawn on Friday afternoon with lots of help. One of our Board members set up a bedroom suite with donated items - bed, night stand, lamp - in the middle of the lawn and stayed there all night. Rocky reported a number of cats, a raccoon, and three apparently inebriated visitors who thought they could begin shopping early. That is, until Rocky sat up in bed and loudly cleared his throat. They quickly departed and forgot about shopping.
Thanks to everyone who donated, and special thanks to everyone who worked so long and hard to make our first yard sale a success.
