Photography by Michael Miller

The emotional reality of a photograph is captured best when the subjects are distracted by their thoughts and feelings, absorbed in the “between moments” of their relationships. Capturing these private glimpses can add a layer of richness to the remembrances preserved in the photograph. Michael calls this “Natural Photography” and it has become the most sought-after aspect of his work.

Michael has developed a number of methods to process photographs to achieve the special, natural feel of the emotion. He uses a specially-developed blending technique that preserves detail while providing a romantic softening of the facial features, eliminating any imperfections, resulting in a dreamy feel to both portraits and landscapes. Miller also has developed techniques to transform photographs into artistic images possessing the feel of watercolor or oil paintings.

Michael is available by appointment only for portraits, weddings and other special events or for evaluating customer images for further processing and restoration or conversion to art. He can be reached at mbmiller2 (at) gmail.com for appointments.

About the Artist

Michael Miller began taking photographs as editor and photographer for his high school newspaper and yearbook in the early 1970s. He became skilled at photography and photo-processing through many years of experience both as an amateur photographer and professional writer and editor. His photographs have been published locally in the Roanoke Times, where he has provided freelance services for news, local interest, and sporting events, including being designated as the official NCAA photographer for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for events such as the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (NCAA Div III Championship) as well as numerous other ODAC sports events. Michael was granted an interview and photographic session with the ESPN College Game Day talent crew of Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Jim Fowler, and was invited to sit with them in their broadcast booth.

Artistically, Michael strives to capture the alternative images presented between the poses. Through his Natural Photography philosophy of image-making and his skills in processing those images toward specific emotional boundaries, he attempts to evoke a universal understanding of the human condition through artful preservation of the everyday occurrence as well as the special event.

Michael is managing director of Virginia Media Services
