About Bowls and West End

Lawn bowls has been a popular British sport for hundreds of years. "It is a sport that takes just seconds to learn - and the rest of your bowling career to master," claims Bowls England, the organisation which runs the sport in England. Played outdoors on a flat square of grass, or indoors on an artificial surface, bowls can be played by all ages.

West End was founded in 1928 when a Councillor decided that it would be a good idea to have a bowling green at the west end of Newquay. This club would be in addition to the one at the east end now known as Trenance.  Eventually West End was opened in Fore Street in 1935. A match between East End and West End was played on the opening day resulting in a win for West End. The club is celebrated its 80th birthday last year.

Our 80th birthday celebrations were a great success, with an exhibition and a visit by Tiffany Truscott from Radio Cornwall to recall memories from the past. The club is a thriving club with a successful competition and social side. New members are always welcome and if you would like to find out more, you could turn up any morning ( unless wet ) from 10am to 12 midday. New players can borrow shoes and woods and there will always be a club member to offer advice if needed. Another good time to turn up is Tuesday and Friday afternoon from 2pm when friendly matches are played. We look forward to seeing you there!
