New Mills Parade and Fete

For those not from New Mills or new to the area, New Mills Parade and Fete is an annual carnival parade and fete which takes place in New Mills each June.  This year's (2011) parade will take place on Saturday 11th June.

Like many towns and villages in the area, New Mills has a proud tradition of carnivals and parades, with the event being able to trace its roots back over a century, with the first carnival to be held in the town being a pageant in aid of medical charities.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, which many people in the town consider the heyday of the carnival, the event raised money for a swimming pool (which was opened in 1980) and then a sports hall.  In 2004 the Carnival was reinvented by a new committee and returned as the Parade and Fete and has continued ever since, going from strength to strength and raising money for local groups and organisations, just as the pageant in aid of medical charities did in the past.

Although the Parade and Fete differs each year, the carnival parade always comprises of various floats, bands, dance troupes, carnival royalty and individuals and groups in fancy dress, as well various vehicles, such as classic cars, which crowds line the streets to watch.   The fete comprises of various forms of entertainment, such as band performances and birds of prey flying displays, stalls, attractions, crowning of the carnival royalty and a fun fair.

Each year, to provide inspiration for floats, fancy dress outfits and decorated shops, houses and other establishments, the event is given a theme.  The theme for 2010 was 'Sport and Pastimes'.  This year's (2011) theme is 'Travel and Transport'.

The parade and fete features various bands, dance troupes and entertainers, some new to the event each year, some old favourites. Regulars in recent years have included the United Co-op New Mills band, Phoenix  Musketeers, the Anvil Street Drummers, the Billerettes and the Stockport Silver Jubilees dance troupe.

The parade and fete is organised by a small committee of volunteers who work throughout the year to organise the event.  It is self financing, with the event funded from programme advertising and sales and gate money.

Although the main aim of the Committee is to organise an annual carnival, which, it is hoped, will be enjoyed by the whole community, thanks to the generosity of the people and businesses in New Mills, the event continues in the tradition of being able to donate money (after costs) to local groups and organisations.

In addition to the Parade and Fete, the committee arranges various events throughout the year, including the Annual Art Competition (held in September), in which local children compete to design the cover the Parade and Fete programme, and the annual Presentation Evening, where the annual donations are handed out.
