Dr. William E. Russell - Pastor:

Dr. Russell has been serving as Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church since September of 1992.  He graduated from Virginia State University in 1960, and has since received his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Education from Temple University, after beginning studies for the ministry at Crozer Theological Seminary, Chester, PA in 1963.

A Virginia native hailing from Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach), he returned to Virginia in the early 1990’s after a lucrative 27 year career as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in New Castle County, Delaware.  Upon his return to be near friends and family, his retirement proved to be short lived as he began serving as Assistant Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools in 1991, and as Deputy Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools in 1995.

In addition to his duties of Pastor and Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Russell is also involved in a number of civic and community activities.  He is a member of the NAACP, Old Dominion University’s Board of Visitors, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.  He also received the L.D. Britt Community Service Award because of his involvement in the creation of a scholarship that assists students who wish to have careers in medicine.

Dr. Russell is married to our first lady, Angela C. Russell.  They now reside in Portsmouth, VA and have three grown daughters.
