This website was created for the Newcastle Fig Forum, held on 16 January, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Newcastle City Hall (Hunter Room).
The event was successful beyond the expectations of the organisers.
The crowd was estimated as between 200 and 280 people.
The Lord Mayor, Cr John Tate, opened the meeting, which was MC'd by former Newcastle University Chancellor Trevor Waring.
Caity Raschke (from Save Our Figs) gave a summary of the issue from the perspectives of the Save Our Figs organisation.
The Keynote speakers were:
- Professor Mark Stewart
- Mike Ellison (via live video internet link)
Mr Ellison and Mr Stewart then joined other experts and community representatives for a Q&A forum, based on questions generated by the community and the audience.
The Q&A session was facilitated by Paul Scott (Deputy Head of the School of Design, Communication and Information Technology at The University of Newcastle)
The other Q&A panelists were:
- Doug Lithgow (President, Parks and Playgrounds Movement)
- Fee Mozeley (Coordinator, Save Our Figs)
Some of these questions were put to the Q&A panel on the night of the forum.
Others could not be (mostly due to time, though some were not directly relevant to the issue of the Forum).
The Fig Forum Committee is currently dealing with some practical wash-up matters arising from the forum, but as soon as time permits we will be posting the questions on this website, with answers from relevant people.
