CERT Training Materials

This page is used to support the annual training sessions - please refer to our regular website for the most current information about New Canaan CERT.

Our next training class will take place in Fall 2013 -- details will be posted on the main website.
In the mean time, you are encouraged to complete the registration forms on the CERT website.

Before Starting the Course
Participants will need to complete a registration form and a Hold Harmless form.  Completed forms can be dropped off at the New Canaan Police Station or brought to class the first session.

Upon Completion of the Course
Participants who successfully complete the full curriculum have the opportunity to volunteer as members of New Canaan CERT.  Members of New Canaan CERT are provided with a Red Cross backpack, basic disaster gear, a Town Identification Card, and can participate in additional training sessions.

CERT Basic Training Course   (required for all CERT members)
The six-session course in Disaster Preparedness is offered each fall in collaboration with Wilton CERT. 

The sessions cover:

  • Introduction to Disaster Preparedness
  • Emergency Medical Operations
  • Incident Command and Team Organization
  • Disaster Psychology
  • Terrorism & Sheltering in Place
  • Fire Suppression & Light Search and Rescue

Participants who successfully complete the full curriculum have the opportunity to volunteer as members of New Canaan CERT and become Red Cross volunteers. Members of New Canaan CERT are provided with a Red Cross backpack, basic disaster gear, a Town Identification Card, and can participate in additional training sessions. 

ARC CPR/AED and First Aid have been moved from the basic training curriculum to supplemental training, but will be offered as soon after the basic course as possible.

The training will be conducted by New Canaan and Wilton chapters of CERT.

Introduction to Incident Command System (recommended for all CERT members)
ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
 
ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
ICS 200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS.

Search and Rescue Tutorial

This tutorial allows CERT-trained individuals to review and refresh their skills in sizeup and search and rescue techniques.
 
Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams
IS-317, is an independent study course that serves as an introduction to CERT for those wanting to complete training or as a refresher for current team members.  The IS-317 can be taken by anyone interested in CERT. However, to become a CERT volunteer, one must complete the classroom training.

National Incident Management System - Introduction (suggested for all CERT members)
IS-700 This course introduces and overviews the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
