Nevisian excels in 10K run in Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico - Vernice Wattley-Blackett of Hardtimes, Gingerland, placed 337th out of 3,809 female runners at the 2011 edition of the World Best 10K held in Puerto Rico on Sunday 27th February. Vernice placed 39th out of 528 female athletes in her age division.
9,288 overall finishers (with 11,357 starters) including 5,479 men, competed in the world renowned 10K event, with Vernice placing 2,429 overall.
Her net time (from passing the start line to the finish line) was 56 minutes 8 seconds with a pace of 10 min 11 sec per mile and an overall time of 1 hour 3 minutes 13 seconds. Vernice participated in previous World Best 10K events in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 & 2010.
She is a renowned middle and long distance runner who still holds multiple St. Kitts - Nevis National Records: 1,500m (4:53.00) set in St. John's, Antigua at a Leeward Islands Senior Championship Meet in 1995 and the half marathon record (2:02.44) set in 2003. She has also competed in many 10K events and half marathons for Nevis and for the Federation.
