Thompson and Spencer finish in top three in Diamond League Bislett Games by Clayton Clarke
OSLO, NORWAY: TT’s National 100m Champion Richard Thompson was second in the IAAF Diamond league 100m in Oslo, Norway earlier today (Friday 4th June). Thompson, the double Olympic silver medallist(100/4x100) clocked wind assisted 9.90 seconds but was beaten to the line by Asafa Powell of Jamaica.Powell, the former world record holder clocked 9.72 seconds but wind was 2.1 meters per second just over the legal limit of 2.0. In third place was Churandy Martina of the Netherland Antilles in 9.92 seconds. In the heats earlier in the day, Thompson topped the second heat in 10.08 seconds a season best for the 2008 NCAA indoor/outdoor champion. Powell won the first heat in 10.05 seconds. Thompson beat his previous season’s best of 10.12 second in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 23.
St.Lucian Lavern Spencer was third in the women’s high jump(1.94m) behind the 2007/2009 world outdoor champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia (2.01) and 2010 World Leader American Chaunte Howard Lowe (2.01). Spencer recently set a new national and Caribbean record of 1.98m when she won at the Georgia Invitational in Atlanta, US on May 8. Spencer, the 2001 World Youth bronze medallist is looking toward the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India from October 3-14 where the 2007 World Championship/2002 World Junior Championships finalist will be hoping to improve on her fifth place finish at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
