Zepherinus Joseph triumphed over a field of 25 men for his second consecutive hold on the NEMWIL-sponsored Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Half Marathon, his fifth win overall in this event.
The 34-year-old native of Mon Repos led a St Lucian 1-2 in Kingstown, St Vincent & the Grenadines, 43-year-old compatriot Victor Ledgers finishing second on a mountainous course that left the athletes short of their best times.
Joseph and Ledgers crossed the finish line in the Vincentian capital at 1:14.13 and 1:15.21 respectively. Curtis Cox of Trinidad & Tobago was the top finisher from outside the OECS, the 41-year-old clocking 1:16.13 for third.
Meanwhile, hometown favorite and former OECS champion Pamenos Ballantyne led the charge for the host nation. Pamenos stopped the clock at 1:17.48 for fourth place, in a race that featured runners from just seven territories.
Trinidad & Tobago’s Shermin Lasaldo led 12 women over the line in 1:39.18, the 20-year-old beating Vincentian veteran Lisa Daniel (1.43.27) into second. 22-year-old Kenisha Pascall came in at 1.50.39 to take bronze for Grenada.
Vernice Wattley of Nevis (St. Kitts - Nevis) placed 9th in the female category and 32nd overall in a time of 2:29.50, winning 1st place in the Veterans category. She also won an award for the oldest female among the twelve female participants. Leron Ponteen of St. Kitts (St. Kitts - Nevis) placed 14th overall with a time of 1:42.34.
