1/2 Marathon

President of the St.Kitts- Nevis Cycling and Triathlon Federation Winston Crooke, spoke exclusively to NTV Sports on Sunday 15th January about the upcoming half marathon planned for Nevis.

Crooke noted that the 31 miles event will be the first of its kind to be held on the island and is encouraging all of the top long distant runners on the island and all individuals who are keen on maintaining a regular fitness program, to ensure that they register for the event. He noted that the event is expected to attract not only local participation but some top regional athletes as well. He also expects some of the persons who will be participating in the grand Tri star triathlon in March, to use the event as a form of preparation.

According to Crooke, the event will cater for three levels of athletes:
· The half marathon
· A 10k run
· A 5k run/walk

No matter the level of participation, all of the athletes will commence the course in the vicinity of one of the sponsors ‘The Octagon,’ situated on the Samuel Hunkins Drive. The course will also be completed in the same general area.

The athletes for the half marathon will run from the Samuel Hunkins Drive, along the island’s main road, to the Vance Amory Airport and return. The athletes for the 10k run will commence at the same point and run to the Gazebo at Cotton Ground and return, while the athletes for the 5k run/walk will travel to as far as the Four Seasons Resort and return.

Crooke also explained that the event is being hosted in conjunction with the Diabetic Association of St.Kitts and Nevis (DASKN) and therefore there is a significant level of awareness being brought to the fore in terms of the importance of having a regular fitness program which will assist in warding off various forms of disease.

The grand event is scheduled for Sunday 29th January and is set to commence promptly at 7am. Host hotel and sponsor Oualie Beach Hotel is offering special rates for the runners coming from outside the federation and Mr. X Water Sports
has put on a special boat trip to bring the many competitors coming from St Kitts and will leave Frigate Bay at 5.45am on the morning of the race.

There will be finishing medals and T-shirts for all competitors, along with trophies for the top three male and female athletes in each race. There will also be special bonus cash prizes of US$250.00 for the 1st placed male and female in the Half Marathon.
