Several Caribbean athletes continue to shine ahead of this summer World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada July (19-25) and the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore (August 14-26) with some world leading junior (under 20) performances. Reigning Double(200/400) World Youth Champion Kirani James of Grenada heads the Men’s 400m standing with 45.02 clocking. The University of Alabama freshman achieved the time in retaining his Carifta title in the Cayman Islands on April 3rd. James, who took the 200 and 400m titles at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Sudritol, Italy is now the 11th fastest junior over the one lap event. Deon Lendore of Trinidad and Tobago, second to James at the Carifta,  is at number 7 with a personal best of 46.59 seconds. Carifta bronze medallist Jermaine Gayle of Jamaaica is one spot behind at eight with 46.80 seconds. James is at number three in the 200m with the 20.76sec he set in taking his second gold at the Carifta Games. 15  year old Odane Skeen of Jamaica is number 4 after running 20.84 seconds to take the Boys under 17 Carifta gold. One place behind is Rachmil Van Lameon of the Netherland Antilles (20.90). Skeene, who was recently named on Jamaica’s Youth Olympic team is also joint tenth with Van Lameon on the 100m standing with 10.46 seconds.
Jehue Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago heads the 110m and 400m standings. In the sprint hurdles Gordon’s time of 13.41 set in taking gold at the Carifta Games is the quickest for the year over the 99.0 cm barriers. The silver and bronze medalists from the Carifta occupy 6th (Gregmar Swift of Barbados-13.75 sec) and 7th (Stefan Fennell of Jamaica-13.76 sec). In the one lap hurdles race Gordon ran an impressive 48.47 seconds to lead the pack. His time is the fifth fastest ever over the distance with only world record holder Danny Harris of the US (48.02) and Gordon himself (48.26) recording faster times. Jamaicans Dwayne Extol (6th-51.50) and Jodi-Rae Blackwood (8th-51.56) are the other Caribbean athletes in the top ten.
US Virgin Islands double World Youth 100/200 silver medallist Allison Peters is the quickest on the junior women’s 200m ranking with 23.29 seconds set at taking winning in the Cayman Islands. In the 100m, Peters is 6th with 11.51 seconds just behind Michelle Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago (11.50) and ahead of V’Alonee Robinson of Bahamas (11.57).  Chantel Malone of the British Virgins Islands heads the women’s 400m standing with 52.35 seconds.  Shaynae Miller of Bahamas, the Girls under 17 Carifta champion is at seventh with her gold medal winning time of 53.36 ahead of Jamaican Jody Ann Muir at ninth with 53.46 seconds.
