The Nevis Amateur Athletic Association sucessfully hosted the "2006 LEEWARD ISLANDS TRACK & FIELD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP" at Grove Park, Nevis. The standards of organization, performance and crowd support ranked it as the one of the best sporting events in the Leeward Islands and one of the best Youth meets in the Caribbean.

Six (6) Caribbean countries participated in the two (2) day meet held on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June 2006, with the opening ceremony on Friday evening, 2nd June. This Championship meet was one of the highlights of the Track and Field season, with participants from Antigua/Barbuda, St. Kitts, Anguilla, St. Martin, United States Virgin Islands and hosts Nevis. Unfortunately British Virgin Islands and Montserrat were unable to attend. The top Leeward Island Youth athletes (Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 years) participated and more than 150 athletes are competed in Track and Field events. Medals and Trophies were up for grab including Overall Champion, 1st and 2nd Runner-up and Class Champions.

A number of planned proposals that were implemented included:

  1. Live radio coverage
  2. Video & audio streaming over the Internet, targeted to overseas sports enthusiasts and to locals unable to attend the meet. The video provided images from cameras operated by the local Television station (NTV) with images of the entire event.
  3. Colourful and detailed opening ceremony using the full range of Nevisian cultural talents, including a parade by all teams from the picturesque Charlestown waterfront.
  4. First Security Event Plan and Official’s event manual used in a Leewards Championship
  5. Special Invited guests (IAAF representatives)
  6. Full photo-finish system linked with a wireless computer network providing images and results accessible to many.
  7. Integrated meet management software to manage all aspects of the meet including registrations, results, scores, class champions etc.
  8. Workshop for meet officials for the Championships.
  9. Electronic displays
  10. Team reception at Government House

Twelve (12) sub-committees were formed to ensure that the meet was effectively managed. The Organizing Committee implemented most of its proposed plans for these Games.
