2003 LEEWARD ISLANDS TRACK & FIELD
YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
 

St. Kitts emerged Champions of the “Leeward Islands Track and Field Youth Championships” held on Saturday 24th May and Sunday 25th May 2003, at the Antigua Recreation Grounds, Antigua.  St. Kitts amassed a total of 337 points, with the runner-up, Antigua & Barbuda, on 212 points.  Nevis, the former hosts of the event totaled 166 points, while the other participating countries were British Virgin Islands (125.5 pts), Anguilla (82.5 pts) and Dutch St. Martin (9 pts).

The meet featured athletes in the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 age categories, in a full range of events including sprints (100m, 200m, 400m), middle distance (800m, 1500m) and field events (High and Long Jump, Shotput and the Cricket ball throw).

The Antigua and Barbuda Amateur Athletic Association, under the leadership of Mr. Everton Cornelius, President, staged the successful meet.

  • Class champions for the Under-11 female category were Kaydeen Liburd and Shakeila Butler of St. Kitts with 18 points each, and in the male category, Jevier Fahie of St. Kitts with 19 points.
  • Class champions for the Under-13 female category was Stacy Chandler of Antigua with 19 points and in the male category, Jason Richards of St. Kitts with 24 points.
  • Class champions for the Under-15 category was Anika Jno-Baptiste of Antigua with 19 points and in the male category, Withley Williams of St. Kitts with 21 points.

Lester Blackett, President of the Leewards Association, was pleased with the superb performances of the athletes and stated that “the meet represents our mini-Olympics for the Youth in the Leewards region and the performances augurs well for the future of athletics, with the creation and display of talent in the mold of Kim Collins, Heather Samuels and Dion Crabbe, to name a few”.

In related athletic news, the “Leeward Islands Junior Championship” will be held in Tortola this coming weekend, Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1, 2003.  The meet will feature athletes of the Under-17 and Under-20 age categories.  The Leeward Islands Athletic Association will also be holding its Annual General Meeting after the first night of competition.  The Vice President of the International Association of Athletic Federation, Mr. Amadeo Francis, of Puerto Rico will be a special guest at the meeting.
