BOLT... another title to his collection

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) - Usain Bolt set a new 400-metre record and local star, Darrel Brown, retained his 100-metre crown to highlight the evening session of the 32nd Carifta Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last night.

Bolt fended off a bold challenge from Trinidad and Tobago's Jamil James to win gold in 46.35 seconds, shortly before the 100 metres, that featured three Jamaican wins and a fifth consecutive Carifta 100-metre title for Trinidadian Darrel Brown.

Jamaica ended day one leading the medal table with 11, six gold, three silver, and two bronze, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago with 5 (2-3-0) and Grenada 4 (1-2-1).

The 16-year-old Bolt, who won 200-metre gold at the World Juniors last year, appeared threatened when James sped past him entering the straight, but the tall Jamaican responded immediately with a crippling burst of speed that propelled him to his record run, bettering the previous mark of 46.51 by T&T's Damion Barry in Barbados two years ago.

James (47.34) narrowly held off Bahamian Andretti Bain (47.39) for second.

Jamaica completed a sweep of the 400 metres when Aneisha McLaughlin topped Kittitian Tiandra Ponteen (52.76) and Jamaica's Davita Prendergast in the Girls Under-20, while Anabella Reid (53.81) and Joseph Robertson (48.54) shared the Under-17 titles.

Brown's mid-race acceleration set up an easy 100-metre win in a wind-assisted 10.20 seconds, ahead of the Netherlands Antilles' Churandy Martina (10.37), with Jamaican Tesfa Latty (10.40) third.

All other 100-metre gold medals went to Jamaicans - Kerron Stewart (11.41) taking in the Girls Under-20, while Renaldo Rose (10.65) and Samantha Henry (11.71) landed the Under-17 titles.

Antiguan star, Janill Williams, suffered her first ever 1500-metre defeat in seven years of Carifta Games appearances, when Jamaican Kayann Thompson sped away from her midway the final lap, to win the Girls senior event by 20 metres in four minutes 31.75 seconds, reversing last year's placing. All three medallists went above the previous Under-20 discus mark, with Jamaica's Kimani Kirton taking second at 51.25 metres, and Martinique's David Villeneuve, the 2002 Under-17 champion, third at 51.09 metres.

Alain Bailey, the reigning CAC Junior champion, captured the Under-17 high jump gold at 2.03 metres over Akeil Facey (2.00) in a Jamaica one-two finish, with Grenada's Joel Phillip (1.95) third.
