How to Get Images from Illustrator into Photoshop

Images in AI (Adobe Illustrator) are often crisper, cleaner than what one can get in PS (Photoshop).  Especially if one is starting from pre-existing images.

Specifically speaking, it is the illustrations or line drawings that is crisp in AI.

If you need to get a line drawing that is rendered in AI into Photoshop, then these are my steps:
  1. Open the .ai file in Illustrator
  2. Select the illustration (or group of them)
  3. Copy and paste into a new AI document.
  4. From the new document,
File > Export .. > (name your new file) > Save as type: psd > Save
  5. Now you can open your new .psd file in your Photoshop.

How to make the image larger

If you want to have a larger image, it is best to do it first in Illustrator then export (because you will retain the clean lines).
  1. Open the .ai file in Illustrator
  2. Select the illustration (or group of them)
  3. Copy and paste into a new AI document.
  4. From the new document, select your image/group
  5. Object > Transform > Scale .. > (specify the increase percentage)
  6. Check the "Scale Strokes and Effects" (optional) > OK
  7. Now you have a larger (and still clean) image.
File > Export .. > (name your new file) > Save as type: psd > Save
  8. Now you can open your new .psd file in your Photoshop.
