Section NExT

The Northeastern Section will be holding a Section NExT program for new and relatively new colleagues beginning at noon on Friday, May 30th, before the main meeting begins.

By providing talks and workshops on issues of interest, opportunities to meet and share ideas with other new colleagues, and an introduction into Section activities, we hope to assist new faculty in their transition from graduate school to professional academic life. We welcome all untenured full-time faculty, both those who have and have not been National NExT fellows.

Schedule for Section NExT on Friday
  • 12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
  • 1:00 - 2:00 Rachel Schwell, Central Connecticut State University -- Adventures in Pre-Tenure Moore Method: How a Risk Paid Off
    • Abstract:  It can be tempting to think that one should stick to the status quo before having obtained tenure and/or promotion. I will provide at least one counterexample by discussing the "risks" I took as a junior faculty member in experimenting with modified Moore Method and other inquiry-based learning techniques, and how it all fit into my successful quest for tenure and promotion. I will share what I have learned, both in terms of teaching and student learning, and also in terms of my career goals and how they align with the academic life and expectations at my institution. I hope to generate a discussion that will resonate particularly with the junior faculty members in the audience and their own paths to tenure.
  • 3:00 Main portion of Section Meeting begins
Lunch will be provided for the Section NExT program, and the meeting registration fee will be waived for all Section NExT participants. To register for the Section NExT program, you should contact Jason Molitierno, and you should fill out the registration form for the meeting and check off that you will be attending the Section NExT program.
