A TASTE OF HISTORY

THE ORIGINAL NEELY'S CIRCA 1927

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NEELY'S ON GRAND

Neely’s On Grand is the oldest continuously operated business at its current location in Marshall.

It was August 15, 1927 when the doors opened to “Neely and Sons Brown Pig” sandwich shop on West Houston near the old Fairgrounds where today’s Loop 390 crosses West Houston Street.  The business was started by Lonnie and Mamie Neely, featuring a barbeque sauce and smoke pit cooking technique developed by Lonnie’s mother a generation earlier .The original sandwich shop was part gas station.  They had 7 boys and 2 girls.  All were born, raised, and schooled in Marshall.  In the 1950’s James Neely returned from WWII, married Frances Wall and ran the “Sandwich Shop” with Mama Neely and Frances.

They moved to a place just up the street from our current location where Pelz Jewelry is today.  In 1961 they moved to the current location which had been the Circle Diner. The circle refers to the traffic circle that formed the intersection of US HWY 80 and 59.  Before Interstate 20, this was a major intersection of East West traffic.  Along with the Bob Hope Motel, Neely’s became a destination for weary travelers.  Over the years the reputation of that unique Brown Pig taste spread nationwide.

James and Frances were the proud parents of Geraldine and Francene “The Neely Twins.”  For years the Marshall High School yearbook featured an advertisement photo of the twins in front of Neely’s on Grand.   They are still active in Neely’s today.

The story of Neely’s is the story of our customers.  For 85 years you have included us in your lives.  All of us at Neely’s are dedicated to serving you with the same good food and friendly spirit passed on to us by James, Frances and Mama Neely. We need your continued support and your good words to help bring the next generation of customers into this great tradition.  “Yaw Come Back Now…Ya hear?”
