                     Bob Devaney - Nebraska 1962-1972

Bob Devaney, the Bobfather of modern Nebraska football.  You would be hard pressed to find a coach that ever did a better job of turning around a football program.  Nebraska had been a football power early on but you can look at the page at this site titled Hard Times to see that the Huskers had become a very poor football program.   In the 5 years before Devaney arrived, NU was 15-34-1 with 13 of those losses being shutouts.

In 1962, Devaney's first year, he finished with a 9-2 record including NUs first bowl win ever.  Since freshmen were ineligible and transfers have to sit out a year, he accomplished all this without a single player he recruited.  The next year he won the first of 4 straight Big 8 titles, and would eventuallly finish with an overall record of 101-20-2 (.829) 8 conference titles won or shared, a 6-3 bowl record, and 2 National Championships.
