Guest Speaker: Christine Eberle

Our speaker at this year’s Friends of the Newman Center dinner will be Christine Eberle, who served as Associate Director from 1993-2004 before becoming Director of Campus Ministry at Gwynedd Mercy University. Christine has just published her first book, Finding God in Ordinary Time, a collection of daily meditations based on true stories. After 25 years in the field, Christine is more convinced than ever that campus ministry plays a critical role in helping students discover how God is at work in their lives. She will share those insights—along with some of the WCU Newman-based stories from her book—at our gathering. She will also sell and sign copies of Finding God in Ordinary Time, donating to the Newman Center 50% of her proceeds from all books sold that night.

ABOUT THE NEWMAN CENTER

WHO WE ARE

The Newman Center is the Catholic Church serving the campus of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. For over 45 years, the current Newman Center building has been the home-away-from-home for countless college students seeking to enrich their faith and serve in the community.

WHAT WE DO

Sunday Mass is the central point of our week at the Newman Center throughout the Spring and Fall semesters, as well as the Summer sessions. Students assist at Sunday Mass as Liturgical Ministers and music is provided by a student-directed choir. Flowing from Mass, there are several weekly opportunities for Christian service in the community of West Chester and larger service projects around the country each semester. Building on a strong missionary tradition, we are currently participating in a Christian Service trip to Washington, DC. The largest local project of the year that the Newman Center hosts is a Thanksgiving Food Drive that provides food donations for families in need throughout Chester County. Along with service, the Newman Center offers many opportunities for prayer with retreats every semester so students have the opportunity to deepen their faith and fellowship. The Kairos retreat has had great success as a college retreat in recent years. Another opportunity for spiritual growth and friendship are the weekly Word meetings where students gather to read and reflect on the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday. During these times, students gain a deeper knowledge of the Scripture and how it applies to their lives. In addition to these weekly meetings, the Newman Center hosts regular catechesis discussions centered on film or lecture series regarding the faith. The Newman Center also offers opportunities for spiritual growth through student-run Women’s and Men’s Groups. The Director and Assistant Director of the Newman Center are assisted by an Executive Board of students who help to plan and organize the social, service, and spiritual events.
