Turkey Monster, Rabbit Ears, Chicken Rock—the rock pillars and arches rising from the forests of the Menagerie Wilderness suggest a petrified zoo. In fact, the crags are remnant plugs of the volcanoes that built this portion of the Old Cascades 25 million years ago.

Today, the trail up to Rooster Rock’s former lookout site offers not only a look at this ancient menagerie but also a view of the entire South Santiam Canyon from Iron Mountain to the Willamette Valley. The trail is a particularly good choice for a conditioning hike in spring, when the rhododendrons bloom.
