Highest point between the Strawberry Mountains and the Cascades, the brown pyramid of Fields Peak commands a panoramic view of the John Day Valley. Although all-terrain vehicles are allowed on the summit trail, they are rare. And the delightful path to McClellan Mountain is blocked to motor vehicles altogether. Bring a hat, because the route has little shade on hot summer days.
