Once upon a time I wanted to be an astronaut. Not only in the wide-eyed 10-year-old- space-nerd -way (though that was, and still is, certainly true), but even in college and graduate school. But now that I’m too afraid to even ride a Tilt-a-Whirl I can't seriously consider such a career path--but back when I did, one person I looked to as a role model was Kathryn Sullivan, best known as the first American woman to walk in space. Though that remains a historic and impressive accomplishment, as well as her earlier career in marine exploration, the reason she caught my attention was that she’s a geologist like me, a rare species in the manned space program.
When she began working for NOAA I had hoped that someday I might at least get the chance to least meet her. But not anymore. Have a look at this or the attachment below.
