Congratulations to our Henley Rowers!
Hard work and lots of practice paid off. Five members of our Club had some impressive results at the 133rd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta held in St. Catharines, Ontario. This regatta is hailed as the top amateur rowing event in North America and attracts rowers from Canada, United States, Europe, Australia and Latin America.
Riley Knight, Ayla Malainey, Meg Montgomery and Claire Thomas competed in the U17 Women’s category, while teammate Makala Mullaly competed in the U19 Women’s category. The girls were accompanied by coaches Craig and Kylie Rutherford.
The four U17 girls worked their way through heats and semis to end up 2nd overall in the finals of the quadruple sculling event. In similar fashion, the duo of Knight and Malainey came up with 3rd overall, out of 48 boats, in the final of the doubles event. Knight topped off a very successful week with a 5th place finish in the singles final, out of a field of 42 boats. Mullaly rowed strongly in her single heat and in the double heat with partner Montgomery but was unable to progress to the next level.
