Healthy Strides

Your friends here at NAMI Greater Indianapolis want to stay true to our mission, as we represent many in the great exodus to better health. This is the reason why we created the initiatives for Healthy Strides for Longer Lives! Persons with serious mental illness die, on average, 20 to 25 years sooner than peers due to comorbidities, in addition to the effects of symptoms of illness and suicide. Standing on the sidelines of this statistic is not an option for us because we are concerned about the welfare of our supporters! Physical, mental and emotional/spiritual health will be promoted, as you create healthy habits, which will increase your happiness and Improve wellness. We want you to live a full life with your families and friends, and have lots of fun doing it. So, join us as we embark on our journey to take great strides for life!

Important Update Regarding Healthy Strides for Longer Lives Initiatives

All events have been postponed due to very low participation from supporters.  However, the contests and other awareness activities that are promoted on our Facebook page will continue.

NAMI Greater Indianapolis would like to know how we can provide services and social engagement activities that will help you in your recovery.  We would like to approach the initiative differently by asking you what you need from us.  Please send notes to the office, e-mail, post on our Facebook page, or call us and let us know….. because only you know what will be beneficial for your well-being.  If we receive enough responses, we will take action.  Thank you for continuing to be a part of this organization, and please let us know what you think.

BYE-CYC-ILL Challenge for Youth

Say goodbye to poor health as you ride your bicycle for FUN! The challenge is to ride as often as possible, and along the way, creatively photo journal yourself having fun, getting fit, experiencing new sights and trying new things.
August 10th 2016 through October 31st, 2016
And
March 1st, 2017 through May 31st, 2017

Open to youth ages 6 through 17. If you are at least 6 years old and not 18 yet by August 10th, 2016, you are eligible to participate.

First, create a nick name for each participant to be used when posting photos to Facebook. When posting photos, the nick name must be included in the post (or we may not know whose points to tally!).  Please post each participant in a family separately to Facebook, as not to confuse the judges.

Each month, post each participant’s pictures to the NAMI Greater Indianapolis Facebook page in an album, and we will tally the points for each rider that month. You want to post creative photos. All photos for each month are due by midnight on the last day of that month, or we will not add those points to the participant’s score. That would be a bummer!

The rider with the most points at the end of each three month challenge will win a $100.00 VISA gift card!

How points are accumulated:
Each ride is worth 5 points (only one ride/photo per day will be counted)

Creativity points:
(Only one creativity category counted per day)
Related to Mental Well-Being=3 pts.
Related to Physical, Exercise or Sports=2 pts.
Related to Spiritual Health=1 pt.
Extra Credit:
Each picture of participant helping a neighbor will earn them an extra 10 pts! The bike, rider and neighbor must be in photo. It is proven that persons who help others are happier, have more confidence to reach goals, and have better mental health!

No photos that are deemed dangerous will be accepted. This includes street photos.
GOOD LUCK!!  Be Safe and have FUN! We can’t wait to see your photos and progress!
