Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city, and it’s also known as an arts and culture capital. A special blend of heritage buildings, museums and galleries, fine food and live entertainment opportunities make this city a great place to visit in any season.

Part of Wellington’s charm is its close proximity to nature. The central city is nestled between a beautiful harbour and forested hills. Wildlife sanctuaries, islands, seaside villages, ocean beaches and regional parks provide huge scope for outdoor fun.

MY TRAVEL AGENT'S suggested experiences in Wellington:

1.  WANDER IN AND AROUND THE BOTANIC GARDEN

Catch the Cable Car from Lambton Quay up to the Botanic Garden, then wander down through 26 hectares of specialist gardens, native bush and lawn areas to historical Thorndon, New Zealand's oldest suburb. Or take in the 360° panorama of Wellington city, harbour and the Cook Strait from the top of Mount Victoria.

2.  SOAK UP SOME CULTURE AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM

Te Papa is New Zealand's innovative and interactive national museum. Explore the great treasures and stories of this country – its unique natural environment, Mäori culture, art heritage, and fascinating history.  With a combination of the latest technology and classic story-telling, Te Papa educates, entertains, and inspires.

3.  TOUR THE PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS

Gain an insight into New Zealand's political heritage.  On the tour, you will hear about the everyday life and activities of Parliament, with stories from the past and present.  You will learn about New Zealand’s system of government and parliamentary processes.  You will find out about the history, architecture, refurbishment, and restoration of Parliament Buildings. You will discover some of the artworks displayed in the parliamentary precinct that celebrate our rich cultural heritage.

4.  EXPLORE THE HARBOR AREA

Wellington has one of the world's most beautiful harbours. The waterfront area between the city and Oriental Bay is a popular recreation area for visitors and locals alike.  Walk around Queens Wharf to Oriental Bay for a swim at the golden sand beach. If you're feeling adventurous, try sea kayaking, rollerblading and rock-climbing. Make yourself welcome at a café, restaurant or bar on the waterfront, which is an ever-developing hub and entertainment precinct.

5.  VISIT THE LOCAL VINYARDS

Spend some time tasting world class wines in the Wairarapa region, an hour and fifteen minutes outside of Wellington. You can explore the boutique wine village of Martinborough, a wine lover's paradise by bicycle.  Everyone will stop and sample some of the wines that are on offer, especially the Pinot Noir.  To cap it off, indulge in a gourmet lunch at one of the award winning wineries.
