This is a very basic summary of the myth.
There was a young women named Arachne who boasted she was a better weaver than everyone, even Athena. Athena came to her in the form of an old woman and told her to be careful. However, Arachne said she was better, so she challenged Athena to a contest. Athena turned back into herself and accepted the challenge. Both women weaved wonderful tapestries. When they finished Athena and saw Arachne's flawless work she tore it to shreads. Arachne killed herself. Athena tapped her on the forehead, brought her back to life- only as a spider, not a human. This is why spiders are called arachnids.
