Class Outline

This part of the site will have more detailed information and advice than is provided on the course outline. It also allows me to attach any supplementary documents (i.e. template / sample)

Please engage in general Q&A on the assignment description using the comments feature so that we can keep together all the information on that assignment.

Assignment Rationale

  • Encourages careful, systematic observation methods
  • Treats our qualitative experience and discourse as research data, as it could be in a business meeting
  • Teaches report communication through a report-like format
  • Helps us take seriously the learning and participation we perform in class
  • Reinforces learning for everyone
  • Creates continuity between classes

Course outline description

·    (15%) Two class discussion reports (2 x 750w** see below for Alternative Frequency & Length** minimum each, and class participation – Dates TBA.  Sign up to write 2 class discussion reports.  Include your responses to selected elements of lecture, presentations (if any that day) & a summary of the class discussion, identifying ideas and questions contributed by each person present.

Write it like an informal, internal research report (in which the participants are not anonymous), in professional format, with headings: Introduction – Methods – Findings [with analysis/discussion immediately after each theme or “subset” of findings] – Conclusion and Recommendations.  Create at least one chart or figure to visually represent your data or insights.  At least 30% of the report’s content should consist of your own creative analysis, synthesis and insights based on the evidence you select and summarize for the report.

Post it online within 5 business days after class, and bring paper copies for all of us to the next class, so that we can review it as a record of the previous class and discuss its features as a pseudo-research report.

Within these reports’ data may be found a partial, written record of your class participation.  Every class, demonstrate that you have prepared by reading and thinking about the assigned readings, bringing questions and relevant contributions to class.  It is also encouraged, but not required, to participate in online discussion (i.e. replying to posted presentation material or class discussion reports), and if you do so, it will be included as additional evidence of the quality and quantity of your class participation.

Alternative frequency & length

OR -- 1 report x 1,500 w. with additional reflections & citations

If you do a longer 1500 word report once in the term, you will need to include at least 750 words of your own further thoughts on the topic, including some ideas cited from your research, organized as needed within the sections described above.

Submission

Post it online within 5 business days after class, and bring paper copies for all of us to the next class, so that we can review it as a record of the previous class and discuss its features as a pseudo-research report.

Post on Blackboard Discussion Main

  • Create a new Thread
  • Subject header begins with the word Class Report.
  • In the message body should be at least one sentence, as Bb will not accept attachments to empty messages.
