About the project
In April 2011 the Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, through the Department of Geological Survey and Mines sought to implement a modern Mining Cadastre and Registry System based on FlexiCadastre, a product provided by Spatial Dimensions. The goal of the project was to improve transparency and security of tenure; increase accessibility of information to private sector investors including small-scale miners; and ensure standardisation and uniformity of mineral licensing procedures.
In September, 2012, an online mapping portal giving public-domain data on mineral licenses was launched, giving users free and open access to data on the location, companies, coverage and dates of application and expiration. (Adapted from Spatial Dimensions)
