Ο συγκινητικότερος ύμνος στον έρωτα που έχει ακουστεί. Απόσπασμα από την Αντιγόνη του Σοφοκλή
Στο τρίτο στάσιμο ο χορός εξυμνεί την παντοδυναμία του έρωτα μέσα στη τραγικότητα της σύγκρουσης του εθιμικού δικαίου με τον νόμο, κατά το πνεύμα της τραγωδίας, με τα ακόλουθα λόγια σε μετάφραση Κωνσταντίνου Μάνου: "Έρωτα ακαταμάχητε εσύ που ξενυχτίζεις στου κοριτσιού τα μάγουλα, εσύ που αιχμαλωτίζεις ως και τον πλούσιο άνθρωπο, και στις καλύβες μπαίνεις, και θάλασσα διαβαίνεις και θάλασσα περνάς! Κι ούτε κανείς αθάνατος εγλύτωσε από σένα ούτ΄ άνθρωπον εφήμερο δεν άφησες κανένα. Εσύ που είσαι το λούλουδο ζωής τυραννισμένης εσύ που ξετρελένεις εκείνον που κρατάς! Εσύ και δίκαιον άνθρωπο σπρώχνεις στην αδικία εσύ και τώρα εσήκωσες τέτοια φιλονικία. Κι ο πόθος κόρης όμορφης πιά βασιλεύει ακόμη παρά οι μεγάλοι νόμοι που εδώσαν οι θεοί. My favorite of all of the Oedipus cycle. Irene Papas was brilliant as Antigone. Truly a gem of Greek filmmaking.

Many of the actors of the film (the actors playing Creon, Teiresias, the first elder) participated in the Greek Resistance movement against the Nazis (the "Creons" of WW2). The oxymoron is that Manos Katrakis (king Creon), who in this film impersonates the power which suppresses people, was exiled after the liberation of Greece for several years to a greek deserted island (Makronisos) because of his communist political views. On this island there was a concentration camp where communists were tortured to renounce their political views. There is a story from that period that reminds of greek tragedy. Katrakis was once again asked by the anticommunist state officers to sign a statement that he renounces communism, so that he could be released. So he asked his most beloved person, his old mother: Katrakis: Mother, do you want me to come home? mother: How would you come home? Katrakis: I'll sign and I'll come... mother: What will you sign? Katrakis: A statement. mother: What kinda statement? Katrakis: That I'm not what I am. mother: And you are not? Katrakis: Yet I am... mother: So, don't you dare to sign such a statement!
