Each of  the Netherlands' three largest cities is a capital in its own way and each has its own special falvour. Amsterdam, the official Capital is the social and cultural center, and its theaters, concert halls, museums, and cafes are famous. the city's brash liveliness and its ' live-and-let-live' attitude towards deviant behaviour give it an international reputation.Amsterdam is the place for having fun. Amsterdam is often referred to as one of the most colorful cities in the world. And rightly so! Where else do you find so many places of interest, famous museums, The rest of the country looks to Amsterdam as the innovator- the 'radival cutting edge'. Amsterdam is alos affected by the fact that it is always full of visitors from many other countries.

  The city of Amsterdam is located on the banks of the rivers Amstel and Schinkel, and the bay IJ. Several parts of the city and of the urban area are polders, recognisable by their postfix -meer meaning 'lake', such as Aalsmeer, Bijlmermeer, Haarlemmermeer, and Watergraafsmeer. Amsterdam began as a fishing village in the late 12th century. According to legend, Amsterdam was founded by two Frisian fishermen, who landed on the shores of the Amstel in a small boat with their dog.
