Twelfth Night

On the Twelfth Night after Christmas (aka the Epiphany), Carnival season begins in Louisiana. The Lord of Misrule first appeared in New Orleans at a ball hosted by "The Twelfth Night Revelers" on January 6, 1870; that group still opens the official Carnival season.

In New Orleans, the first King Cake was and is served on Twelfth Night (January 6) and is eaten through midnight on Fat Tuesday (the day before Lent).
