March General Meeting
VP Jimmy A. came through with another great General Meeting on March 23. Approximately
66 people attended the meeting which was catered by New Leaf Catering. Along with the food came much socializing, a raffle, and a funny, insightful talk by Ken DeHart. Ken is the Director of Tennis at San Jose Swim and Racquet; a nationally recognized motivational speaker, and the 2009 PTR Member of the Year. He shared some practical tips for playing better tennis and some amazing old rackets with the crowd. Thanks to Connie Gannon, Carol, Tolen and Diane Silverman for manning (womanning?) the Registration table. And to the following locals for their support of the Club:

David Panconi of Mountain View Tennis donated private lessons - (408) 893-1405, dpanconi@mountainviewtennis.net

April Mixed Tournament - Carrie Bell
folks who brought food to April Mxd Dbls? Their names are listed on "who`s signed up" window under Kathy`s announcement. The food was excellent, and no one left the all-day event hungry.

It was my pleasure to be the tournament director for the April mixed doubles tournament, which became the first MVTC tournament of the year, since Team Tennis was rained out in March. We had a total of 42 players entered in three divisions, all eager for a little competitive
and fun tennis. Although it was cool and cloudy at times, it stayed dry and by midmorning the conditions were quite ideal—neither too cold nor too warm.

Division III consisted of the 5.5-6.0 teams, and this division had some of the most competitive matches of the day. The longest was the first round match between Mila and Sasha Ovsankin and Britt Huber/Erwin Oertli. The Ovsankins finally prevailed 6-4, 6-7, and then 14-12 in the match tiebreak—what a close match! Congratulations to the Div. III main draw winners, Jill Nagahara-Evans and Agni Ananda, who won by walkover in the final when Jim Evans and his partner Tracy VanDenBerg had to withdraw due to an exacerbation of a foot injury. The consolation round winners in Division III were Carol Tolen and Gene Lee, who also had a very close match in the final against Amy Fontarensky and Julian Tham, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.
       Division III
Champions:  Jill Nagahara-Evans and Agni Ananda               Consolation Winners: Gene Lee and Carol Tolen

Division II consisted of 6.5-7.0 teams, who also had some great matches. There were a couple of husband/wife pairs in this division, Lisa and Adam Halpern, as well as Heather and Vinny Pallaver, who brought along baby Daphne for the day. They set up their portable nursery outside of court 5 and played both of their matches there so they could tend to the baby! This division featured a full third set in the final, chosen by the players instead of a match tiebreak even though it was the third match of the day for both teams! Lynd O’Neal and Solomon Tan were the winners in a very tough match over Chi Zheng and Robert Inocencio, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The consolation winners were Nora Hayward and Johnny Pham, who won a close match over Keiko Simon and Jeremy Chen, 6-4, 7-6.
  Division II
Champions: Soloman Tan and Lynd O'Neal                     Consolation Winners: Nora Hayward and Johnny Pham

The teams in Division I were in the 7.0-8.0 range. Once again there were several husband/wife teams, including Catherine and Michael Puzon, Kathy and Mike Sansevere, and Shirleen Ong/ Rob Laing. The main draw winners, however, were MVTC tournament coordinator Kathy Wheeler and Roy Molseed, who overcame a very tough challenge from Ong/Laing to take the final 7-5, 7-6. The consolation draw winners were the Puzons, who defeated Katharine Altemus/Mike Siew 6-4, 6-3.
  Division I
Champions: Roy Molseed and Kathy Wheeler          Consolation Winners: Michael and Catherine Puzon

Many thanks to all the players who entered. Special thanks to food coordinator,Tony Serksnis, who supplied a wonderful breakfast of Hobee’s coffee cake, fruit, and yogurt, as well as Tony and Alba’s pizza for lunch, supplemented by some wonderful salads, desserts and
other contributions from Kathy Wheeler, Lisa and Adam Halpern, and Jeremy Chen. Thanks also to Kathy Wheeler and Katharine Altemus, who took care of a lot of the details, both in the planning stages as well as on the day of the tournament. One last note of thanks to Philip Stromer, who although absent for this tournament, helped me out with a few issues in regard to the tournament software. Overall it was a great day of tennis!

May Singles Tournament
Hey!  All of you singles warriors!  This is a great warmup tournament for marathon French Open TV watching.  Get out on the Rengstorff hard courts and we'll provide the red dirt so you can pretend you're at Roland Garros! Just kidding, regular old hard courts for this one, too. This is a Men and Women's singles tournament.  Women who sign up will be playing in the same draws with the men. For instance: if you're a 4.0 woman you'll be playing against 3.5 men. A consolation round guarantees you two matches.

Entry fees: MVTC members $22 , non-members $25.
Tournament Director: Kathy Wheeler
Food Chair: TDB (need a volunteer)
