Volunteer Opportunities
WANTED: We need coordinators for some important jobs, see list at right and contact Team Reps if interested.
Concessions -- Concessions are a big part of our fund raising. The profits go toward social activities of our swimmers and competition equipment for our pool. Your volunteer time at concessions during meets and contributions of baked goods greatly enhances these efforts.
Pool Set Up / Take Down and Parking-- It takes a team of volunteer parents to set up the pool for all home meets. Setting up the pool for a home meet at MVP takes approximately an hour with a team of 10-12 people. This is an especially good volunteer job for those parents who want to sit and enjoy the meet. To volunteer, just show up early. Parking is also a great opportunity to volunteer and then sit and enjoy the meet, and because kids need to be at meet early for warmups, you are going to be there anyway!
Social Activities -- We try to schedule social activities for the swimmers during the summer. Parents are needed to organize and chaperone these events. In the past, these have included pep rallies, movie nights at the park, and teen nights. Without significant parental support, these will not happen. Please consider offering your assistance with one or more of these events.
Deck Officials (Referee, Starter, Stroke & Turn Judges, Relay Takeoff Judges): Must have knowledge of swimming technique/rules and all positions except RTO require NVSL training. Consult the Gator Calendar for training dates.
Timers: Timers determine each swimmer’s official time for the race. There are three timers for each lane (a mix of home and away team parents). Being a timer is a good entry-level position for new parents. Does not need knowledge of swimming technique.
Clerk of Course: The “gatekeeper” for all swimmers in the meet: checks swimmers against meet sheets; organizes swimmers in lanes; sends them to the start at the proper time. Needs patience but does not need knowledge of swimming technique.
Table Workers: The time cards from the timers and any disqualification slips from Officials go to the Table Workers who determine the order of finish for each event, score the meet, and prepare ribbons for the participants. Several people from each team perform these functions to ensure accurate results.
Data Coordinator/Computer Ops: Data Coordinator works with HyTek system to assist Team Rep and Coaches in prepping for meets and reporting results to team and NVSL. Does not need knowledge of swimming technique, but computer skills and willingness to learn unique programs (Team Manager and Meet Manager) are crucial.
Announcer: Assists officials, coaches, swimmers, and spectators by announcing upcoming events/heats and previous results.
Marshals: Observes and directs swimmers during warm-up periods and meets to ensure their safety. Keeps deck clear. Maintains quiet during starts.
Parking: Help get folks into the park and parked safely. The beauty of this job is that you are done before the meet starts and then you can sit back and enjoy the meet!!!
To volunteer, contact either the appropriate volunteer coordinator listed in the right-hand column or the Team Reps.
