Daniel McFarlane (Head piano teacher)

Daniel McFarlane was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1979. After moving to Brisbane, he commenced music lessons at the age of four. He studied initially under Mark Gibson and later went on to further study at the University of Queensland under Bevan Crabtree.

Since 1997 Daniel has taught students piano, theory and composition in Brisbane. Many of his students have gone on to tertiary study in piano performance, composition, music education and jazz performance.

Daniel’s first series of compositions, Supersonics, was released in 2008. This was followed by the release of Soundwaves and Soundscapes in 2011. Supersonics Reloaded (a combination of the Supersonics and Soundscapes series) was released in 2013 to simplify the print music series. As of 2013 all of Daniel’s new compositions will only be released in digital format on this website. Daniel’s compositions are listed on the St Cecilia, ANZCA and Australian College of Music piano syllabi.

“Daniel’s publications extend to all corners of the world. I am continually amazed at how often I hear his compositions in the examination room. Students and teachers really take to Daniel’s compositions. They are both musically and technically stimulating.” Matthews Tyson (Director and Head Examiner – St Cecilia School of Music)

Daniel has conducted workshops on composition and teaching for the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and for music teachers in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast. He has adjudicated competitions in Launceston (the St Cecilia Performance Challenge) and on the Sunshine Coast (the Sunshine Coast Piano Competition).

Daniel currently lives in Brisbane with his wife Melanie (now a doctor but previously an extremely competitive piano teacher), young daughter Annabelle (a creator of epic mess and a lover of ff  cluster chords on the piano), dog Bella (an avant-garde artist responsible for the Michael Heizer-esque “earth art” creations in the back yard), and several baleful-looking fish (the albino shark is particularly creepy). When he’s not annoying the piano or teaching Daniel occupies his time by chasing after the toddler, walking the dog, going for the (occasional) run, reading, eating, drinking and generally making merry.

In a previous life Daniel excelled on the sporting field and has represented Australia in athletics.
