Mumbai Connexions is actively involved with a wide range of local charities, many of whom we have supported over several years and with whom we now have well-established relationships. Our involvement can take many forms – financial, volunteering, and through donations from members.

There are many ways to get involved. You do not need to be a teacher or have any special skills, you just have to care, and your time and effort will be rewarded.

The only “qualification” for volunteering at the charities that we support on a regular basis, is that you make the commitment to attend as often as possible and keep the coordinator advised of when you are unable to attend.

If you can’t commit on a regular basis you may like to volunteer when special appeals are made for support. We are always in need of volunteers who can join in ad-hoc events such as summer outings, Christmas parties, providing transport for eye screening programmes and so on.

You could even volunteer your time making crafts (perhaps by joining our Craft Group – see activities). The proceeds raised from the sale of these craft items are used to support various charities on an ongoing basis or through special donations.

Regular Charity Activities

Swimming with the Blind Boys Help the boys gain new skills and confidence, and have some fun. You do not need to be a fantastic swimmer, or a member of Breach Candy Club, where it is held weekly. Each volunteer is paired with 1 – 2 boys, so the more volunteers who come, the more boys we can help.

Bingo with the Seniors Every week we spend a fun morning playing Bingo with these lovely senior gents and ladies. Birthdays are also celebrated each month. This is a very rewarding way to spend a morning.

St. Catherine’s Orphanage A group of 20-30 boys and girls between the ages of 4-7 practice their English and do a craft or activity. We organise a Christmas party for over 100 children at the orphanage in early December each year.

Mumbai Mobile Creche For the children of migrant construction workers. Our volunteers come weekly to teach English through lessons, songs, activities, games and crafts.

Apne App For the children of brothel workers. Our volunteers bring friendship, love and an opportunity for the girls to learn new skills and have some fun through various craft projects.

Welfare for Stray Dogs Volunteers come each week to help walk the dogs. The dogs quickly get to know you and give you a wonderful greeting each week.

Other Opportunities

Society of the Helpers of Mary A multi functional facility which welcomes volunteers to assist their students with homework daily or weekly, but ask for a regular commitment.

Mann Centre A centre for individuals with special needs. They welcome volunteers who can commit to 4 regular visits. This enables the students to get to know the volunteers.

Help provide a quality education for a child by sponsoring their education: this includes books, uniforms and tuition for a year.

  • a special meal at an orphanage, school or senior’s facility. It can be as simple as providing a few eggs or some meat to supplement the regular meal provided. This could be one, once a week or once a month. Such a small thing can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.
  • assist with funding an activity at any of the outings or events we support.
