Useful Tools for Media

We are constantly on the lookout for cool tools that make life easier in multimedia creation. This list contains some excellent media and web 2.0 tools, most of them free and many of them online.  Be sure to check out Animoto, an online video creation engine. You upload your media assets; music, video and photos add some text and in the time, it takes to drink a cup of coffee you will get an email announcing that your movie is ready for preview and download. If you do not like the results tell Animoto to do it again, it’s different every time. Thirty-second videos are free, high definition, unbranded full length videos can be produced for $39 per month.  There are special plans for educators.

Another tool suite we love is Aviary, this bird themed set of online tools contains a powerful audio mixer/editor (Myna), image editor (Phoenix), vector editor (Raven), music creation program (Roc) and other tools.

AutoCollage http://blogs.msdn.com AutoCollage is a picture editing tool with a big difference – it works out what to do with your pictures, so that you don’t have to. You point it towards a folder of pictures, and it analyses the contents, using a range of intelligent features. It then uses that analysis to blend your photos and combine them into an AutoCollage.

Camtasia Studio http://www.techsmith.com/ Camtasia Studio is a screen video capture program. The user defines the area of the screen or the window that is to be captured before recording begins; it is also possible to capture the entire screen area or integrate PowerPoint slides. You can also narrate, and use a videocam.

Flickr http://www.flickr.com A social photo-sharing site that offers new benefits. Users can view, comment and subscribe to photo streams, establish private groups for photos, and use the photos in numerous ways under a Creative Commons license. 
Garage band http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/ GarageBand turns your Mac into a full-featured recording studio. Build a beat with the included loops, then plug in a guitar, bass, or microphone. 
GR Sound GR Sites  A collection of free sound effects, available in WAV and MP3 formats. 
iTunesU http;//apple.com iTunes U gives you free access to some of the world's best thinking—lectures from MIT, labs from Stanford, films from the MOMA, and is the site of many College of DuPage media assets.

Microsoft Bing Translator http://www.microsofttranslator.com/  This Bing website allows for direct language translations or offers desktop or website widgets for language translations.

Microsoft Photosynth http://photosynth.net/  Photosynth takes your photos, mashes them together and recreates a 3D scene out of them that anyone can view and move around in. Different than static photos and video, Photosynth allows you to explore details of places, objects, and events unlike any other media. You can’t stop video, move around and zoom in to check out the smallest details, but with Photosynth you can.  
Microsoft Songsmith http://microsoft.com/songsmith  Songsmith generates musical accompaniment to match a singer’s voice.
